Kaichou wa Maid-sama! Shōjo Manga Gets TV Anime

Romantic comedy about student council head who secretly works at maid café

The October issue of Hakusensha's Monthly LaLa magazine will announce on Monday that a television anime adaptation of Hiro Fujiwara's Kaichou wa Maid-sama! shōjo manga has been green-lit. The romantic comedy centers on the student council head named Misaki Ayuzawa who despises the mostly male, slovenly population at her school, which was once an all-boys school. However, Misaki's most handsome schoolmate just discovered her secret — that she works afterschool at a maid café. Tokyopop is publishing the second volume of the manga this month under the Maid Sama! title.

New Haruhi Suzumiya Anime Episode Airs (Update 4)

"Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody" is 1st animated episode since original 2006 run

Sun Television, the broadcasting station in Japan's Hyōgo Prefecture that is Japan's first station to run The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya anime's "renewed airing" in 2009, has aired the first new anime episode in almost three years on early Friday morning. The 2009 airing has been running its episodes in the story's chonological order, and "Sasa no Ha Rhapsody" ("Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody") is the next story chronologically in Nagaru Tanigawa and Noizi Ito's original science-fiction comedy light novels. However, this episode was not animated during the anime's first airing in 2006.

Update: The Teletama station in Saitama Prefecture, northwest of Tokyo, is now the second station to air the new episode.

Update 2: Yasuhiro Takemoto, the "Brigade Leader's Assistant" of the 2009 broadcast's main credits, directed and storyboarded this episode. Futoshi Nishiya, the 2009 run's production chief director, supervised the animation production. Fumihiko Shimo (episode 8 and 13 of the 2006 run) wrote the episode.

Update 3: Haruhi voice actresses Aya Hirano, Minori Chihara, and Yuko Goto sings the new ending theme song "Tomare!" as their characters Haruhi Suzumiya, Yuki Nagato, and Mikuru Asahina, respectively. The CD single will ship in Japan on August 26. Source: Natalie

Japan Teaches about Jury Duty with School Romance Anime

Not-So-Daily Link of the Day: The Japanese government has commissioned a 22-minute anime video called "Bokura no Saibanin Monogatari" (Our Jury Story) to teach its citizens about the re-introduced jury system. In July, Japan will implement jury trials for the first time in six decades, so most Japanese have never experienced jury duty. The anime uses a high school boy's one-sided infatuation for a classmate as an unusual segue to discuss the jury system.

Omnibus Japan and Tomason produced the animation in collaboration with Group TAC and Studio Cj. Veteran voice actress Minami Takayama (Detective Conan's Conan, Kiki's Delivery Service's Kiki and Ursula) plays the lovestruck boy Shōta alongside fellow cast members Yuki Tashiro, Daisuke Sakaguchi (Clannad's Youhei Sunohara), and Akeno Watanabe (To Love-Ru's Rito Yūki).

The Japanese-language video is available from the government's website (in broadband or narrowband) or via three user-submitted YouTube streams.
